free radicals and antioxidants

We often watch TV commercials about free radicals and using antioxidants against them.
Aging process and diseases are said to be due to generation of free radicals either endogenous or exogenously.

How Antioxidants May Prevent Against Free Radical Damage

Antioxidants neutralize free radicals by donating one of their own electrons, ending the electron-"stealing" reaction. The antioxidant nutrients themselves don?t become free radicals by donating an electron because they are stable in either form They act as scavengers,

doc,how could the vit.C and D be stable although they donated their own electrons?

actually there is answer "because they are stable in either form They act as scavengers"

but i dont understand it.because all i have learned is that if there is not enough electron,it becomes not stable.

can u make it easy?

hi Pete,

thanks for the reaction. Foremost it is Vit C and E. I think the proper term there is sharing their electrons rather than donating it. By sharing they form a rather stable molecule thus stopping the instability or the catastrophic chain reaction.

But the only way we can know the true mechanism of its acitivity is to know the mechanism of tocopherol redox cycle.. the article bout VitE in our blod is but a simplified way of explaining its action against free radical
